Endodontics (Root Canals)

Special-interest Root Canal Treatment in Harlow, Essex

In the centre of your teeth, there is a core of nerves and blood vessels known as pulp, which sits inside a space called a root canal. Each tooth can have one or more root canals.

If a tooth is damaged by decay, injury or gum disease, the pulp can become infected by bacteria, causing it to die and leading to tooth loss. If the infection spreads, it may lead to the development of a painful abscess (a pus-filled swelling) or to inflammation of the gums and the tissues and bones that support your teeth.

“I met Neal by chance at Boots, and he went out of his way to help me with a horrible toothache in my molar. Booking an appointment was so easy. Visited the clinic. Had the tooth dressed. Had a root canal recommended. Everything was clearly explained to me, from why the tooth was hurting to why I needed a root canal. The cost of treatment was very clearly explained and reasonable by private clinic standards. After a painless experience, the pain actually went away, putting me out of days of misery. 11/10 would travel over 2 hours to this dentist again."

How Root Canal Treatment Works

Root canal treatment is designed to save the damaged tooth and prevent the spread of infection. The infected pulp is removed, and the root canal is thoroughly cleaned of all bacteria. The empty root canal is then filled with a special substance and permanently sealed, thereby saving the tooth from extraction.

At Lister House Dental Centre, root canal treatment is carried out by our resident Special Interest Endodontist, Michael P Szasz. Using the latest equipment and local anaesthetic, it is normally painless and can be completed in a single appointment. Here’s what the procedure entails:

  • Your Lister House dentist gently removes the infected pulp, which is the soft tissue inside your tooth.
  • They will thoroughly clean the space, removing any remnants of bacteria and ensuring the infection can’t return.
  • Then, your dentist will fill the empty canals and seal the tooth with a cement-like material.
  • Finally, your dentist may place a filling or crown over the tooth to fully restore function and aesthetics.

Are You Experiencing These Symptoms?

You may need root canal treatment if you’re experiencing:

  • Pain when chewing or pressing on the tooth
  • Lingering pain after hot or cold food and drink
  • Swelling of the gum near one tooth
  • A tooth that has darkened in colour

While these symptoms may not always necessitate a root canal, they do suggest that your tooth should be examined as soon as possible.

FAQs

Is root canal treatment painful?

No! Contrary to popular belief, root canal treatment is not typically painful. Our special-interest endodontic dentists use modern techniques and local anaesthesia for a pain-free experience. Most of our root canal patients report feeling little to no discomfort at all during the procedure!  And, in fact, root canal treatment is often performed to alleviate pain caused by tooth infection or damage rather than add to it!

How long does recovery take after having a root canal?

Root canal recovery is typically quick and relatively painless, though you may experience some discomfort and sensitivity immediately following the procedure. However, this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. Most patients can resume normal activities immediately after treatment!

What are the benefits of having root canal treatment?

There are many benefits of root canal treatment, including pain relief, preservation of the natural tooth, prevention of further infection and restoration of function. By saving the tooth through a root canal, you won’t require an extraction, so you can maintain your smile’s integrity!

All the staff/dentists were so lovely, fixed my sons teeth that Barnet hospital orthodontists couldnt do even though they done the operation in the 1st place and now he can't wait to go back for a his check up in 3 month as we've now registered there. What wonderful ladies that made a scared little boy at ease. Thank you x

I’ve been going to lister house for around a year now to complete a procedure and I definitely recommend choosing lister house as your dental centre! I’ve been looked after by Dr Raj and his dental assistant Sam and they are both lovely. I’m always kept in the loop, they answer all my questions, they make me feel comfortable and well looked after!! I was indecisive at first but all my doubts, Raj made sure he put them all at ease. Now my dental journey is completely I’m glad I went through with it! I couldn’t ask for a better dentist, they are quite the team!! Thank you again! 🙂
